Abstract

This paper examines the ancient metrical tradition of the first strophic couple of OT's IV stasimon. Twentieth century editors of Greek lyric poetry tended to employ a rigid working principle of exact correspondence between strophe and antistrophe. We maintain, however, that there is room for a degree of latitude in the dynamic between dochmii. This we demonstrate through a specific passage of Sophocles' OT, arguing for the primacy of manuscript texts over texts amended for the sake of metre. [http://www.jstor.org/stable/25676830]
