Abstract | This paper traces the influence of the Homeric Hymns and their poetic tradition on Horace’s Odes and the Carmen Saeculare. It shows that the key plots of the longer Hymns (to Hermes, Aphrodite, Demeter, Pan, and Dionysus) seem to be used on a number of occasions, though without extensive re-narration; for example, though the Odes several times allude to the career of Dionysus/Bacchus, the famous metamorphosis of the pirates and their ship does not appear. Concerning the brief hymns, it suggests that these shorter pieces (like Greek epigrams) offered particularly attractive models for Horatian lyrics of similar length and shows that the Carmen Saeculare (unsurprising given its status as a poem performed in a ritual context) owes some of its framework to the Homeric Hymns.
