This contribution aims to present the precise role, reception and performative reproduction of musical metaphysics, on which Pythagoras and the early Pythagoreans based their philosophical-religious ideas, in formulating ancient Greek conceptions of the afterlife at the turn from archaic to classical times (6th-5th century BC). Following these philosophically influenced ideas, the souls of the deceased entered an invisible, transcendental area beyond visible, worldly existence. At the time, thoughts referencing musical metaphysics found an allegorical expression in well-known, but mythologically shrouded characters, for instance in the figure of Eros. According to early Pythagorean conceptions, human souls were immortal, as they had a celestial and divine origin. Souls were seen as an eidolon, i.e. an exact mirror-image of physical appearance. They moved winged through the air, and their wandering was closely connected with the harmony and psychagogical function of music. This study attempts to reveal the philosophical aspect behind some of the winged figures on Greek painted pottery which are commonly known as “Eros“.
